Just after 7:00 p.m. on November 12, 2017 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers received information from a witness that the driver of a Chevrolet Tracker was driving on Clegg Line when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a hydro pole knocking out power in the area.
The witness spoke with the driver and attempted to call him an ambulance however the driver declined and left on foot. The witness also watched as a pickup came by to pick up the driver. Little did the driver know but the witness also watched as to where the pickup went to drop off the male.
Shortly thereafter, as hydro employees were in the process of restoring power to the area police received a call from the owner of the Chevrolet Tracker reporting his vehicle was stolen. Police were able to meet up with the owner of the vehicle and after he continued to mislead police with his false allegation about his vehicle being stolen officers were able to positively identify him as the driver involved in the crash.
As a result, David GARNISS, 28 years of age, from Morris-Turnberry was arrested and charged. He has been charged with Public Mischief, Operate Motor Vehicle While Disqualified, Careless Driving and Fail to Remain at the Scene of a Collision. He has been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for January 8, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice - Goderich.
