Source: Area OPP
Date: Thu Jan 11 09:41:46 MST 2018
The primary goal of Project Lifesaver is to provide a timely response to save lives and reduce the potential for injury for adults and children who may wander due to Alzheimer's disease, Autism, Down syndrome, Acquired Brain Injury and other cognitive conditions.
"We are very pleased to be able to partner with Huron County Paramedic Services to bring Project Lifesaver to the citizens of Huron County. I'm certain Project Lifesaver will save lives in Huron County just as it has around the world. Our skilled and highly trained emergency responders will be able to use this time-tested technology to bring loved ones home to their families. If you or your loved one could benefit from this program I encourage you to look into it further."
- Huron County OPP Detachment Commander - Inspector Jason Younan
Pre-registered clients wear a one ounce transmitter, similar to a wristwatch that emits a signal every second. If the person goes missing their caregiver calls 9-1-1 and informs the call taker that they are registered with Project Lifesaver Huron. Trained OPP officers immediately respond to the client's last known location and begin searching for the lost client. The tracking equipment (portable directional antennae) can detect a signal from the client's transmitter from 2 kilometres away on a ground search and approximately 7 kilometres away by air.
Project Lifesaver International was founded in 1999 in Chesapeake, Virginia. It is a community based, public safety, non-profit organization whose motto is "Bringing Loved Ones Home". Project Lifesaver International has assisted in 3381 successful rescues with the average search time of 35 minutes.
There is a one-time set up fee and a nominal monthly fee to participate in this program. For more information please contact:
