Seven demerit points will be added if you are convicted of failing to remain at the scene of a collision. Careless driving, racing and failing to stop for a school bus will get you six. Four points will be added for speeding between 30 and 49 km/hr above the limit. Three for using a cell phone or electronics, speeding between 16 and 29 km/hr, failing to obey a yield or stop sign, failing to report a collision, and failing to slow and move over for a stopped emergency vehicle. Two for seat belt offences including failing to ensure children are properly buckled up.
The consequences for gaining demerit points depend on how many you have added to your driving record:
As a full licenced driver, if you have two to eight points, you will be sent a warning letter. If you have nine to 14 points, your licence could be suspended and you may have to attend an interview where you will need to provide reasons why you should not be suspended. If you have 15 points, your licence will automatically be suspended for 30 days.
As a new or novice driver (G1&2, M1&2 or M1&2-L licence), you will be sent a warning letter between two and five points. Between six and eight, your licence could be suspended and you may have to attend an interview where you will need to provide reasons why you should not be suspended. Nine or more points and your licence will be suspended for 60 days.
