Media partners and interested community members that were in attendance watched as members from the West Region OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a demonstration and located a lost party.
Project Lifesaver Huron uses radio frequency technology to assist in locating individuals who may wander or bolt; typically individuals living with Alzheimer disease, Autism, Down syndrome, acquired brain injury or other kinds of cognitive impairment.
Pre-registered clients wear a one ounce transmitter, similar to a wristwatch that emits a signal every second. If the person goes missing their caregiver calls 9-1-1 and informs the call taker that they are registered with Project Lifesaver Huron. Trained OPP officers respond to the client's last known location and begin searching for the lost client. Each transmitter has its own unique frequency. The technology is proven to be very reliable and very effective. Worldwide Project Lifesaver has assisted in over 3,300 rescues.
There is a one-time set up fee of $400 per unit and a monthly fee of $10. It is because of the generosity of corporate partners such as Bruce Power & Goderich Place that the fees are nominal.
