(TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) - On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at approximately 9:00 a.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a life-threatening situation on Sideroad 30 near Wellington Road 26, Centre Wellington. Initial reports indicated that a 76-year-old woman had fallen through the ice of a private pond while trying to save her dog and was trapped in the frigid water. OPP officers responded, entered the water and pulled the woman to safety. Centre Wellington Fire Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedics Services attended and provided medical assistance. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of exposure.
The dog was able to get out on its own and was unharmed.
Wellington County OPP would like to remind everyone that as the seasons transition so does natural hazards. This means that safety of a frozen lake or pond may give way to flowing water. Also, if the ice can't support the weight of an animal or child, it definitely can't support the weight of a would-be rescuer. Please exercise extreme caution when dealing with thin ice.
