The St. Marys resident had attempted to discontinue a purchased computer service and was advised that an overpayment had occurred. The individual was then directed to purchase iTunes gift cards to reimburse the amount of the overpayment. A large amount of cards were subsequently purchased.
The security numbers on the backs of the cards (located beneath a scratch off surface) were then provided to the scammer. The cards become instantly useless to the victim, and he/she is defrauded of that amount. The matter remains under investigation at this time.
The Perth County OPP are reminding residents that reputable companies and organizations will not request payments in the form of gift cards or online currencies.
"The impact of these types of frauds can be devastating and far reaching. Legitimate agencies will not contact citizens over the telephone. If you receive one of these telephone requests, it should be verified in person whenever possible. If ever in doubt, call police for assistance." Staff Sergeant Steph Pilon, Perth County OPP
