Infant Dead, Two Arrested Names Released

On March 26, 2023, the Grey Bruce Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with Bruce County Paramedic Services and the Saugeen Fire Department, responded to a call concerning an unresponsive infant at a residence on Scotch Settlement Road, Saugeen First Nation. The nine-month-old infant was transported to hospital and pronounced deceased.
As a result of the investigation, Michael RANTON, 33 years of age of Saugeen Shores, and Dakota ROOTE-BESITO, 28 years of age of Saugeen First Nation, were each charged with criminal negligence causing death contrary to section 220(b) of the Criminal Code.
Both accused have been held in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice in Walkerton on January 7, 2025.
The Grey Bruce OPP Crime Unit conducted the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
