On February 9, 2026, at approximately 9:00 a.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside local paramedic services, responded to the report of a single motorized snow vehicle collision on private property in Ponsonby. A 16-year-old snowmobile rider was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to a trauma centre with major, non-life-threatening injuries.
The Wellington County OPP would like to take this opportunity to remind snowmobilers to make safety their top priority this season. Excessive speed, loss of control, alcohol impairment and inattentive riding are the leading contributing factors to fatal snowmobile collisions in Ontario.
A little preparation before hitting the trails goes a long way in keeping your ride safe:
Wear a helmet and other safety gear
Dont ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Check current trail status on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs website.
Check the weather forecast.
Let someone know about your riding plans.
