Council To Spend 1/4 Million To Paint Bell Tower etc Date: 2012-08-10 18:22:29 By: WFP
At Tuesday's council meeting, they decided to go forth and apply for grant to fund Wingham town hall maintenance. This massive expense was being passed off as “economic development”, since a newly painted town hall could attract “drive bys”. While the woodwork at Wingham town hall is in need of painting, tyring to pass this off as “economic development” is absurd. Archie MacGowan suggested that North Huron could create reserve fund for building maintenance. Most families, and all forward looking corporations already do this. If your roof cost $20,000 to replace, and lasts for 20 years, you know you need to put at least $1,000/year away in a roof fund.
Council is applying for a grant that would pay for half of the $250,000.00 project, and North Huron Taxpayers will cover the rest. This project is expected to include painting all exterior woodwork, including the bell tower, and replacing some windows on the second floor. If the grant application is unsuccessful, it is not clear if they will be moving forward with the required maintenance at Wingham Town Hall.

Posted By: winghamdudette Bell Tower You must have been to a different council meeting then I was at because what I heard was the $250.000.00 is for all repairs not just the Bell Tower and I must correct you but from what I understood the other half of the $250.000.00 is coming out of reserve money not tax payers and that is providing they get the grant. My understanding. Thumbs Up:21 (If you agree with the opinions/comment above.) Thumbs Down:22 (If you disagree with the opinions/comment above.) How are those reserves going to be replenished.....YOU again!!! No matter how they word it, you are paying for it....won't they have to deplete reserves for other projects to do this? Made Me Laugh:23 Posted By: ganjakat Misleading What kind of headline is "Council To Spend 1/4 Million To Paint Bell Tower etc?" Did you throw in the "etc" last minute after realizing that without it the headline was misleading the reader into thinking that the $250 000 was only paying for the painting of the tower? The $250k figure is only for PARTIAL repairs, and IF the grant doesn't pan out, then yes..the taxpayers will be the ones paying the bill. It would be prudent for council to consider other locations for the administration until such time as this town actually starts making money (i.e. through economic development, providing a tax base and jobs) Thumbs Up:21 (If you agree with the opinions/comment above.) Made Me Laugh:16 Posted By: markymark996 winghamite The taxpayers are footing the bill even if we get the grant.....the grant is funded by tax dollars too.
