As a result 22 drivers were charged with stunt driving - more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit. On Saturday alone, OPP officers charged 16 drivers for stunt driving. The drivers were issued Summons to attend court in Owen Sound on a future date to answer to the charges. As well, drivers had their vehicles impounded and driver's licences suspended for seven days.
That brings the total for this year to date to over 100 drivers charged with stunt driving on the Bruce Peninsula.
Over the weekend 23 traffic complaints were called into police for aggressive and unsafe driving. Over 50 Provincial Offence Notices for Highway Traffic Act offences were issued, most involving speeding.
"This has been the unfortunate theme for traffic on Highway 6 during the warm weather months. Bruce Peninsula OPP officers continue to work towards changing this kind of behaviour through enforcement and awareness messaging. The last few months' traffic enforcement results read like a story with a painful ending rather than an enjoyable vacation novel. There is definitely a monster at the end of this story and it is not a fluffy puppet. Drivers need to slow down and drive responsibly or, as we have seen time and time again, the results will be tragic and fatal. "
