The campaign, which ran from March 29, 2024, until April 1, 2024, focused on seatbelt compliance. West Region officers conducted over 3200 traffic stops during the long weekend, which was the highest number of traffic stops of any OPP Region in Ontario. Heres a snapshot of the campaign results:
194 seatbelt charges
1559 speeding charges (most speeding charges laid of any OPP Region in Ontario)
40 stunt driving/racing charges
27 distracted driving charges
29 impaired driving charges
A driver can be charged and face a fine between $240-$1,000 and two demerit points if they or any of their passengers under the age of 16 are not wearing a seatbelt or secured in a proper child car seat.
As a driver, wearing your seatbelt and ensuring all vehicles occupants are buckled up gives you, your family and other passengers your best chance of surviving a collision and reducing injuries.
Conducting seatbelt law enforcement and public education forms an important part of the OPPs commitment to reducing fatalities and injuries on our roads.
The OPP wish to thank drivers who made safety a priority for themselves, their passengers and their fellow motorists by driving responsibly.
